Preparing Your Home For a Roof Replacement

Roofers at work removing old shingle roof damaged and needing replacement

Scheduling a roof replacement with Houston Roofing is just the first step to preparing for your new roof. You also have to make sure that your home — and everyone who lives in it — is prepared for the project. Houston Roofing will do everything we can to make the project as stress-free as possible. But roof replacements are still a major home improvement project, so here are a few tips to prepare your home for a roof replacement.

Consider Small Kids and Pets

One of the biggest considerations when you’re having a roof replacement done is your kids, especially small kids, and pets. Work zones can be dangerous, and small children and pets often don’t have the self-preservation skills to stay away. In fact, cats or dogs might lash out, upset by the loud noises. Explain to small kids that you’ll be staying in certain rooms during the project. If your pet typically runs around in the backyard, maybe take them for a walk instead and keep them behind closed doors when at home.

Protect Your Belongings

Your roof replacement is likely to shake up the walls a bit in the process, so make sure you take down any wall hangings before the project begins. If you have anything in the attic that you want to protect, you should also put a protective covering on it to keep construction dust away from it. If you have flowerbeds, put protective covering over them as well while work is being done. Rest assured, your roofers will clean up after they leave. Patio furniture should also be cleared away.

Give Easy Access

Your roofers are there to do a job for you, so be sure that they have the access they need. If you don’t have room in your driveway, you may want to leave the car with a friend or neighbor for a couple days so your roofers have room. Make sure to mark any sprinklers or ponds on the property so that roofers don’t trip or miss anything. If you have a gate leading to the backyard, make sure it’s unlocked so that they can access the backyard and, from there, your roof.
