How Long Does The Average Roof Replacement Take?

Worried About the Schedule For Your Houston Roof Replacement? Learn What Determines How Long an Average Roof Replacement Takes.

Scheduling a roof replacement can be tricky. Homeowners have a busy schedule, and roofers, too, tend to be booked depending on the time of year. It’s not just a matter of finding the perfect time to begin the roof replacement. It also depends on how long the roof replacement will take.

Fortunately, at Houston Roofing, we’re roofing experts. We tackle roof replacements every day, so we can help give you an idea of how long your roofing project will take. On your free roofing estimate, there should be an estimated timeframe for the project. We can’t give a blanket statement of how long the average roof replacement takes, of course, because every roof is different. We do know, however, all the various factors that affect how long it will be. Here are some elements to consider:

Replace a Roof or Install a New Roof?

In today’s blog, we mean to discuss the time that goes into a roof replacement. However, the term roof replacement is sometimes used interchangeably with other roof installations, even if you’re installing a new roof altogether. The truth is that the latter project will take significantly longer than the other because the entire roofing system will need to be replaced. In a roof replacement, often the roof decking is left in place while the top layers of the roof are replaced. This takes much less labor and therefore less time. It will even take less time to begin because fewer supplies will need to be ordered.

What Time of Year Are You Replacing Your Roof?

Weather delays can slow down the progress of your roof replacement; although Houston typically has warmer, humid weather, we’re not exempt from rain, snow, and storms. If it’s a rainy season, such as spring or fall, the time frame for the project will likely be longer. In winter, there are winter storms to consider. However, spring and summer are the busiest times of year for the average roofing contractor, so in these times of year, you may find that it’s some time before there’s an opening to schedule your roof replacement. Winter tends to be low season for roofers, so you’ll have much more freedom when it comes to scheduling.

At any rate, a roofing expert will know the area well and take weather into account when plotting out their estimated time frame for the roof replacement project.

What Kind of Roofing Materials Are You Using?

Different roofing materials will take different lengths of time to install. For instance, asphalt shingles can be installed in as little as 1-2 days. Heavier materials, however, such as tile or slate, can take a week or longer to install because they need to be treated with more care. Metal roofs fall somewhere in between. There are also some roofing materials that can be installed more easily in winter and others that might take longer depending on the time of year.

At Houston Roofing, we use GAF Roofing products, which use easy-to-install fiberglass shingles. They have a proven roofing system. Their roofing crews have a trusted process that works, so these roofing materials can be installed without too much trouble and certainly without taking a week or more due to the materials.

How Large or Accessible is The Roof?

Another factor is the size or accessibility of the roof, as these will impact the roofing crew’s ease of installation. A larger roof will obviously take more time to install than a smaller roof. A flat roof or a roof with a low slope will have fewer safety concerns than a roof with a steeper slope. Of course, an expert roofing crew will have plenty of experience working with all different types of roofs, and will be insured to protect you from any potential liability. But the process of installing a larger or less accessible roof will naturally be a bit more lengthy than a smaller, easier to access roof.
